Waikiki Beach – Fun in the Sun

The Maitai on Waikiki
Chas with Mimosa

Yesterday was all about having some fun in the sun. Kem had made some reservations to do some sailing/snorkeling mid morning. We got a leisurely start and eventually made our way down to Waikiki beach. There are a bunch of catamaran sail boats that leave directly from the beach. No docks, they just come to a stop on the beach and tie down to a stake in the sand. We got down to the beach and thought we had found the right boat. We even got on and were headed out and only then realized we were on the wrong boat! We could see the one we were supposed to be on coming in for a landing. So they turned around and unloaded us and we got on the ‘right’ boat. The funny thing was though the boats were very similar and ours ended up going out and anchoring (for snorkeling) right next to the one we’d just gotten off. Basically they offered the same service. You can see the Maitai before we headed off in the picture here. The sailing off the coast was a blast.

Later we just parked it on the beach for awhile. We hadn’t really seen much of Waikiki beach so we wandered down the coast a bit. Waikiki beach is sort of like Rodeo Drive and Las Vegas rolled together next to the beach. It’s jammed wall to wall with high rise hotels and high end retail. Not surpisingly we took in the sights but didn’t really do much in the way of ‘shopping’. We just unrolled the beach towels and joined the folks on the beach. Warm, but lovely breezes so not too hot. Water was a great temp so easy to cool off when you wanted.

Later we wandered down the beach to a shady resort hotel and ordered some lunch and as you can see in the picture, a couple of drinks. In the picture here I’m holding up the Mimosa that Kem had ordered. My smirk here is just part of the laughing at the too-cuteness of the umbrella and flower in the drink.

Later we decided we hadn’t had enough sailing yet and hooked up with an impromptu ride with another hourly boat tour operator. They too were sailing a big catamaran. This time though we got out on the netting up front and really enjoyed the waves. Some splashing but we actually thought we’d get a lot wetter. Quite the roller coaster ride.

Today, probably another visit to the beach…

Some Hiking on Oahu

Yesterday was our first full day of getting around Oahu to see a few things. We met up early with Jeff, Kem’s aunt’s nephew who happens to live here on Oahu and works as a geologist. He had some fantastic suggestions for us and took us all out to a spot for a great hike not far from Honolulu. We drove a ways into the hills and then got out and hiked for perhaps an hour up to the edge of some cliffs overlooking Waimanalo Bay on the windward side. The hike up was just challenging enough. Lots of climbing up and over rocks and roots and generally up. It definitely got our hearts going and we worked up a little sweat. But it wasn’t really all that long. Far more challenging on the legs to come down rather than go up.

I took this picture once we got to the top. It looks out over the bay. The color of the water is really spectacular.

We ended the day with a drive up and around Diamond Head to another place Jeff had recommended called the Hotel Kahala. The hotel grounds were nice to wander before dinner. They have dolphins there swiming around, sea turtles, exotic fish, and beatiful flowers. Dinner there outdoors was excellent.

We took a ton of other pictures yesterday but they’ll have to wait. I’ll post some more later. We’re off to get on a sailboat today…

Aloha

Chas & Kem arrive in Honolulu
Kem on the beach

We’ve arrived in Honolulu! It was a long flight from Houston and we were definitely happy to be off the plane. Kem’s mom had prearranged for us to have a greating and receive the beautiful leis you see us wearing in the photo.

The flight was more than a little disconcerting. About 4 hours out – over nothing but water and hours left to go – everyone began to smell some sickening burning electical fumes. Something electrical was definitely burning and the smell was getting worse. The flight attendants started coming up the aisles shouting to check all laptops and anything electrical. Needless to say it was a little tense there for a bit high above the ocean. Eventually the air cleared and after what seemed like a long time the captain came on and announced a recirculating fan had burned out. They had “contained” it. Um, yeah. We white-knuckled it for the rest of the trip and hence the big smiles in the picture. Glad to be on the ground.

The hotel’s nothing special but we figured we wouldn’t really be around there much anyway.

We spent the rest of what was left of the day down wandering the beach and hanging out at a resort lounge by the ocean. Just enjoying some tasty snacks and a nice glass of wine. The time change had us exhausted early so we crashed by 9. More later…

Cairns on Barton Creek

Cairn on Barton Creek

One of the nice things about the location of my current office is its proximity to the Barton Creek greenbelt. When there’s time, it’s convenient to get out for a pretty good walk over lunch. Such was this case earlier this week. I was toting the camera along with me and grabbed a couple pictures of some pretty interesting stacks of rocks. Clearly someone’s spending some time out there to get these rocks just right. One of my coworkers tells me these are called cairns. Then again, I guess you could just call it a stack of rocks. A quick scan of the web finds that some folks have made rock stacking a real art form.

If you look at little closer at the larger of these two pictures you’ll see there’s a series of these stacks up the creek bed.

Out and About Easter Sunday

Chas and Kem's Easter Tandem Ride

The weather started off a little ugly on Easter morning around here. A line of thunderstorms rolled through very early. But as quickly as they rolled through they were out of here and by late morning it was just fantastic out. A perfect, crisp and clear Easter morning.

So after a nice church service full of great music at Westminster, Kem and I took her tandem out for a spin. As you can see, we stopped for some snapshots. Here’s one of me among some wildflowers and alongside the big blue bike.

The other picture below is one of some really great looking flowers that Kem’s neighbors have growing at the front of their house.

Later we dropped the top on the convertible and took the long route out near Lake Travis on Lime Creek Road to friend’s the Moore’s for a little afternoon party they were having. Was really a great afternoon.

Turkey Creek Trail / 2009 Pedal Power Ride

Slim Pickin's
New Growth

March is supposed to come in like a lion and go out like a lamb. Isn’t that how the saying goes? Doesn’t seem to work that way around here. We’ve had more than our share of really windy days in the last month and today was no exception. I saw a few hardy souls out cycling today. More power to ’em. Though otherwise a really nice day, it would have been pretty tough going out there today. Winds easily 20-30mph. I opted instead to go for a little hike. The Turkey Creek trail is not too far away so I went over there. Tucked down in the valley and in the trees it was pretty nice.

I took the camera hoping maybe I’d find some interesting wild flowers. We’re still in a drought here and it hasn’t been so great for lots of wildflowers. Pretty slim pickin’s. I managed a couple interesting pictures along the trail. The yellow flower was one of the few wildflowers I encountered. Despite the drought there’s still a fair bit of new green growth. Caught a pic of that too.

Yesterday was the annual Pedal Power Wildflower Ride in Stonewall (out near Fredericksburg). I had high hopes of riding the longer route and getting in the Willow City Loop – one of my favorite rides. I couldn’t persuade anyone else to do the ride this year but I got up early and headed out. Pretty good turnout as best I could tell. About 20 miles out though the winds had really picked up. As I cruised along at 20mph I could tell there wasn’t any wind at all in my face. It was all tail wind at that point. Great on the way out, but a tough slog back. At Willow City I either would go around the loop and face about 30 miles of cross & head winds to get back to the car, or just make the turn now back now and just do 20. Wasn’t really up for the winds yesterday so I headed back. All in all, still a good ride, though just not the one I had planned for.

They do a nice job of supporting this ride. The rest stops are amazingly well stocked with food. Once again, that first rest stop had the big plates of cheese, summer sausage and sausage wraps! I opted for just a Fig Newton instead. One of the other stops had a huge bottle of Cooks champagne and a couple bottles of orange juice. I had to laugh and of course had to ask them to make me a Mimosa. He proceeded to make me a huge juice glass sized serving. Yikes! Thanks but I’d be pretty useless if I drank all that. I had a few sips though and it was fine.

Neighborhood Wildflowers

Neighborhood Bluebonnets

Everything’s in bloom around here so I’ve pocketed the camera when I’ve been out for neighborhood walks recently. After the wild winds and rains of previous days we have a quiet and sunny morning here and I got this snap of some bluebonnets up the hill a bit from here. Despite the drought we’re still in, the bluebonnets have been pretty good around here this year. Guess we got rains at just the right time. They’re certainly better than last year anyway.

Some of the flowers have to be pretty resourceful. These yellow ones I found clinging to the rocks sure seemed to be taking advantage of what little they had to work with.

Tired Squirrel

I don’t know whether it was the warm weather this past weekend or what, but it sure seemed to tucker out the squirrels around here. Kem and I went on a long walk around the Town Lake Hike and Bike trail over the weekend and we encountered multiple squirrels sacked out like this along the way.

This guy was zoned out enough to have no problem with me getting pretty close to take his picture either.

Jan Delk – Bike Friday rider

I did the usual hilly loop from the house this morning. Down to Ski Shores and back. On many occasions while doing this route I have encountered an older woman riding along on her red Bike Friday. I’ll wave and say hi as I’m passing but today I found her stopped by the side of the road. I stopped to check on her. Everything was ok but we chatted for a bit. She’s something of an inspiration out there on the bike. If she’s a day younger than 70 I’d be very surprised. I’d hazard a guess more like mid 70’s. She loves her Bike Friday and though she hasn’t really traveled with it, she’s out there all the time on it. Good for her. I only hope I’m healthy enough to be out riding at her age.

A Visit to San Antonio

Casa Rio

Kem and I did a short road trip recently down to San Antonio. It made for a nice change of pace. While it’s relatively close by, San Antonio always seems to deliver a little bit of feeling a world away too. We whiled away the time wandering through the King William District and ogling the restored old homes.

Right next door – or maybe it’s considered part of – the King William District was the Blue Star Arts complex. Most of the shops/galleries featured contemporary art. Some I might qualify as a little on the edgier side. The Bettie Ward exhibit of embroidery (entitled “Optimism and Horror”) at the Blue Star Contemporary Art center would certainly qualify.

Later we poked around the galleries and shops of La Villita. La Villita is just up the stairs and right off the River Walk so is a tad bit more touristy than the Blue Star complex. Some really nice stuff though. We found a little watercolor there at a placed called “The River Art Group” that we both liked by a woman named Joyce Sweet. Kem got it for me – what a nice gift!

The picture here is my own snapshot rendition of the painting done by Joyce Sweet. It’s of a place on the River Walk called Casa Rio. I over saturated the colors a bit on purpose to give it a similar sort of feel to the painting. You’ll just have to come visit to the see the actual painting.

Sure Seems Like Spring

Texas Mountain Laurel

I managed to get out for lunch today and what a gorgeous day out there. Our dreary clouds and fog are gone and it’s all sun and warmth. Car said 81 degrees on the way back.

Just outside the door of our office building is a Texas Mountain Laurel in full bloom. Check out the picture to the right. Aside from just looking good, the great thing about these small trees is the scent they give off. Read the link above and they describe it as smelling like grape Koolaid. Well, I don’t know about that, but it’s definitely fragrant. Too bad there’s no scratch-n-sniff here.

Out Walkin

Dry Barton Creek
Squirrel on Barton Creek greenbelt

I was thinking it’s been way too long since I’ve posted anything so I figured it might be time for a quick update. I’ve had the good fortune of being able to get out and enjoy some hikes and bike rides on January and February weekends. In particular, I’ve tried to start getting in some more long walks. Along the way I’ve taken a few pictures too.

Though I’ve not taken advantage of it very often, my office is located just off the Barton Creek green belt here in Austin. Just across the parking lot I can get out on the green belt trails and feel a world away.

The first picture here is of Barton Creek itself just a ways down the path from the office. Looks more like a dusty desert doesn’t it? Austin and central Texas in general has been going through a really bad drought. If you click on that link, you’ll see a big dark red spot over all of central Texas. Classified as “D4” – “exceptional” drought.

As I walked along the path, I think I scared this poor squirrel in the 2nd picture half to death. At least he seemed pretty upset.

The final picture below was actually taken closer to home. I was walking on a trail not too far from home and the bright red berries on this bush really caught my eye. Most everything else is pretty brown right now. I have no idea what kind of berries these are. Kinda doubt they’re edible – but who knows? Don’t think I’ll be trying them any time soon though.

Here’s to Hope

obamicon-me1Well I must say I’m glad to finally see BushCo moving on. The country seems to have been in a perpetual malaise under Bush – one that has only seemed to get worse in the final months of his presidency.

Like a lot of other people, I finally have some hope that things could improve. Perhaps it’s the same hope that we always feel at the start of a new administration, but somehow it feels different this time. That this guy could actually make a difference. I hope so!

Some Fall Color ’08

leaves1

Well can you believe it’s Thanksgiving already?! I blinked and November’s passed me by. By this time of year it finally starts to look and feel a little bit like fall here in Austin. Time once again for my annual search for something approaching fall color. Last weekend I got out on a hike on the Pather Hollow trail near here. It’s a short but peaceful trail that wanders along a creek. Though it’s tucked in amongst a heavily populated area of homes, you’d never know it.

While not quite as spectacular as the change of seasons I remember from ‘back home’, I managed to find some interesting displays of color. My favorite picture of the bunch is the one below of the leaves floating on the water. A real mosaic of colors.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Livestrong Challenge – Austin

Livestrong Challenge

The Livestrong Challenge comes to Austin next weekend. It’s the Lance Armstrong Foundation’s signature fundraising event. While it’s a whole weekend of activities the main thing is the bicycle ride on the 25th. The whole point is to raise awareness as well as funds in the fight against cancer. If you happen by here and are able to donate, please do! Visit my site.

I’m riding for:

My mom – struggled with and beat colon cancer

My dad – dealt with skin cancer

In honor of Susie Wilson – brain cancer survivor

In memory of Lori Edel – breast/liver cancer

In memory of Brian Fix – brain cancer
